September 12, 2014: The September 17 meeting will feature Z.Hong Zhou Ph.D. from UCLA's Electron Imaging Center for Nanomachines (EICN). Mr. Zhou talk is entitled, "Seeing atoms of life by electron microscopy." See program schedule page for details. !!! NOTE: the location of this and future MSSC meetings will be at Wildwood School in West LA. This month is our annual TRADE & SALES Meeting. Bring items to trade or sell. Its time to get rid of the “stuff” you're not using anymore. Perhaps you'll find something good to take home too?

August 13, 2014: The August 20 meeting will feature Dr. Bruce Zuckerman and his brother Ken Zuckerman. The talk is entitled "Reclaiming Ancient Texts with Hig Tech Imaging." See program schedule page for details. !!! NOTE: the location for this meeting has changed to NT Audio.

July 6, 2014: The July 16 meeting will feature Brian Matsumoto. His talk is entitled "Flourescent Microscopy."See program schedule page for details.

June 6, 2014: We are sadden to report that honorable past MSSC President George W. Vitt passed away on May 2, 2014. Our condolescenes go out to his family. A celebration of his life and work is being planned for October.

May 26, 2014: The June 18 meeting will feature Mark Armitage. His talk is entitled "Recent Contributions to the Discovery of Dinosaur Soft Tissue-Triceratops (Paleontology). See program schedule page for details.

May 14, 2014: The May 21 meeting is the not-to-be-missed annual Pond Life meeting. One of our best attended and most exciting hands-on meetings! Bring samples of pond water, ditch water, fountain water etc. Bring your own microscope or check out your water sample with one of the 'scopes on hand at the meeting. See program schedule page for details.

April 12, 2014: The April 16 meeting will feature a presentation by Dr. Karen Trentelman, Senior Scientist with the Getty Conservation Institute's Collections Research Lab, giving a talk entitled, "The Application of Science to the Study of Works of Art on the Getty Conservation Institute." See program schedule page for details.

March 17, 2014: The March 19 meeting will feature a presentation entitled, "A Royal Maya Tomb under the Microscope!," by Kristina Cheung. See program schedule page for details.

February 11, 2014: The February 19 meeting will feature a presentation entitled, "My Adventures With a Microscope," by Glenn Shipley. See program schedule page for details.

January 13, 2014: The first monthly meeting of 2014 on January 15 will feature a presentation entitled, "Strange Creatures - Aliens," and time permitting, some more as yet unseen Chesluk slides. See program schedule page for details.

January 6, 2014: Happy New Year! The 2014 program schedule can be found on the program schedule page. Please pay your membership dues for 2014 asap, they will be deliquent after the third month of the year, see signup page.

November 19, 2013: RSVPs for the Holiday Banquet on December 14th are due to the MSSC President by December 7th. See program schedule page for details.

October 12, 2013: The October meeting will feature Jay (Xiaoze. Ou), from the Department of Bioengineering, California Institute of Technology on "Wide field-of-view microscope based on holographic focus grid illumination." See program schedule page for details. Don't forget the annual MSSC field trip is set for November 2 and will be a visit to the Wildlife Learning Center, sign in to the members area for details (workshop page).

September 3, 2013: This month's meeting will be held on MONDAY September 23, instead of our usual third Wednesday. It will be a sales event. Bring your items to sell, and see what gems others bring. July 22, 2013: This month's August meeting will be hosted by Dr. Richard Weinberg at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. We will meet in one of the School's digital movie screening rooms to view movies shot through a microscope at 4k and HD resolution. s. See program schedule page for details.

June 29, 2013: This month's July meeting will feature Prof. Brian Matsumoto on Old and New: Color Heine condenser and HD video.. See program schedule page for details.

June 25, 2013: Check out Joseph Mastropaolo's article on the Morphological originality and statistical probability of Micrasterias cells and semicells compared to the originality of snowflakes.

June 1, 2013: This month's June meeting will be the annual MSSC Pond Life meeting. See program schedule page for details.

May 1, 2013: This month's May meeting will be on MONDAY May 13th (not our usual third Wednesday) and features Dr. Brian Ford on Solving the Mystery of Human Spontaneous Combustion.. See program schedule page for details.

April 14, 2013: This month's April meeting features Craig Smith, from Insight Scientific Films talking about the making of the BBC documentary, the "Wonder's of Life" and other films he has been involved in. See program schedule page for details.

Please also note that the May meeting will be held on MONDAY May 13 instead of our usual third Wednesday and will feature Dr. Brian Ford on Solving the Mystery of Human Spontaneous Combustion. To accommodate Dr. Ford's talk, the annual Pond Life meeting has been moved to June. See program schedule page for details.

March 16, 2013: This month's March meeting features Dr. Weinberg, Research Associate Professor, USC School of Cinematic Arts talking about his "Digital Cinema Microscopy" project which won an award from the Corporation for Educational Network Initiatives in California (CENIC). See program schedule page for details.

Also the member-only field trip to RDY Sales in the City of Ventura, CA. will now be on Saturday, April 6th, sign in to the members area for details.

February 18, 2013: This month's February meeting features Dr. Izbicki talking about the use of Scanning Electron (SEM) Photomicrographs to interpret hydrologic data. See program schedule page for details.

February 1, 2013: Members, please note the February Sat workshop will be on the second Sat, Feb 9, this month (not the first Sat). The RDY field trip is now planned for the first Sat in March, see members area for details.

January 24, 2013: Members should keep an eye out for more communications on a February field trip to RDY. Also membership list has been updated. Sign in to the members area for details. November 9, 2012: This month's November meeting is a week earlier than normal on November 14, 2012. The MSSC Holiday Banquet will be on Sunday, December 16, 2012, please rsvp to Jim Solliday by December 7th. See program schedule page for details of both events.

October 15, 2012: This month's October 17 meeting will be a presentation from Brian Matsumoto, onmodified Olympus (OM-D) which has its IR filter removed in order to make the camera sensitive to all wavelengths of light, see program schedule page for details.

September 17, 2012: This month's September 19 meeting will be a presentation from Daniel Lewis, the Huntington Library's Dibner Senior Curator of the History of Science and Technology, who will discuss his new book The Feathery Tribe, a biography of Robert Ridgway, the Smithsonian's first Curator of Birds, see program schedule page for details.

August 9, 2012: This month's August 15 meeting will be a presentation from David Scharf, on "The Art of SEM Photography," see program schedule page for details.

July 10, 2012: This month's July 18 meeting will be a presentation from Brian Matsumoto (UCSB) on "Variations of Phase Contrast." see program schedule page for details.

March 19, 2012: This month's March 21 meeting will be by John Izbicki, presenting on "Sources of Fecal Indicator Bacteria along the Malibu, California, Coastline," see program schedule page for details.

March 15, 2012: Additions to the Articles page include a link to Prof. Brian Ford's Crticial Focus article series covering all manner of microscopy-related issues, available on his website and in The Microscope journal.

February 12, 2012: This month's February 15 meeting will be on all things photographic, Brian Matsumoto (UCSB) and his wife Carol will bring us up to date on the latest digital imaging technology, see program schedule page for details.. We are also sadden to report that long-time MSSC member Dario Solares passed away recently. Our condolescenes go out to his family. The March 3 member-only workshop will be a special silent auction at the Solares residence, login to the members area for details.

December 27, 2011: The first meeting of 2012 will be held on Tuesday January 3 is on a presentation by Brian Ford (from the UK) on van Leeuwenhoebe (see program schedule page). Please note: this meeting on the first TUESDAY of January will replace our normal third Wednesday gathering and will be our only lectureship event for the month of January.

December 3, 2011: See news and events for details of the 47th Annual Pacific Micromount Conference, January 28-29, 2012. Also a reminder that there is no monthly meeting in December, instead the MSSC Holiday Banquet, December 11, 2011 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Earth, Wind and Flour Restaurant. The program will include our annual report, highlights from the past year including some exhibits, and a presentation of "Images from the Earth" by MSSC member Mark Armitage. November 27, 2011: We are sadden to report that long-time MSSC member Dr. Robert Faust passed away on November 1, 2011. Our condolescenes go out to his family.

October 13, 2011: This month's October 19 meeting is on materials characterization using TEM presented by Dr. Jian-Guo Zheng (see program schedule page).

September 19, 2011: This month's September 21 meeting is on the microbiology of Cancer and the impact of microbes on the development of AIDS presented by Dr. Alan Cantwell M.D. (see program schedule page). Also check out the clean your microscope hands-on workshop on October 8 (members only, see workshops under the members area for full details) and the new list of the best chemicals for polarized light analysis (under the members area).

August 15, 2011: At this month's August 17 meeting we welcome back NASA scientist Dr. Ed. Leighman Gafford with his presentation Fine Art through the Microscope. Note: this presentation was originally scheduled for July but had to be held over until August. (see program schedule page).

July 20, 2011: This month's speaker Dr. Ed. Leighman Gafford had to cancel at the last minute. Instead this meeting will showcase images of Inner Space (see program schedule page).

July 18, 2011: This month's July 20 meeting will be on Fine Art through the Microscope presented by N.A.S.A. Lunar Scientist Dr. Ed. Leighman Gafford (see program schedule page).

June 13, 2011: At this month's June 15 meeting Richard Weinberg will give a talk entitled, "Shooting movies through a microscope with a RED One Camera" (see program schedule page).

May 16, 2011: This month's May 18 meeting is Pond Life night. Bring a microscope and some pond water samples to share (see program schedule page).Check out a new follow-up article "Illuminated Stage VIII" by Richard J. Nelson on using USB microscopes (see articles page). Plus the members list has been updated (see members area).

April 17, 2011: See program schedule for details of the April 20th meeting on macro-photography.

March 12, 2011: At this month's meeting, we'll have a portable x-ray fluorescence analyzer on hand, so bring samples to inspect. See program schedule for full details of this March 16th meeting.

February 20, 2011: Check out four new articles by Richard J. Nelson on using USB microscopes and magnification issues (see articles page).

February 14, 2011: See program schedule for details of the February 16th meeting. The members list has been updated for 2011 (see members area).

December 28, 2010: MSSC wishes you Happy Holidays and a great start to 2011. The 2011 workshop schedule is now live on the site, along with an updated members list (see members area).

December 2, 2010: Sorry for the delays, but the site is now fully up to date, with details of all the meetings and activities that occurred during 2010. In addition, new articles have been uploaded, and the members area now has a list of biological stains available to loan out to members for use in preparing slides.

February 15, 2010: See program schedule for details of the February 17th meeting.

January 19, 2010: The January meeting is cancelled due to the winter storm and bad weather passing through Los Angeles. Instead members are invited on a field trip to Ventura County Sheriff's Department Forensic Crime Lab on January 30, 2010. Members should have received an email from MSSC president, Jim Solliday with further details and directions.

January 1, 2010: Happy New Year! The 2010 Program schedule is now posted on the website, see program schedule for details. Members, please note that the first workshop of 2010 will be held on the second instead of the first Saturday, ie: January 9, see members area. Don't forget membership dues for 2010 are payable as of January 1, please get them to Herb as soon as possible.

Also the books and articles section has moved from the News & Events page to its own new page titled Articles & Resources, hopefully this will make things easier to find on the site. Check out Richard Nelson's article on using the Lancer LED flashlight as an illuminant for your stereo microscope posted today.

April 23, 2004: Celebrating the one year anniversary of the MSSC's new Web site! January 17, 2004: Due to health issues our Treasurer, Dave Hirsch, has resigned and will be turning his duties over to MSSC member Herb Gold. Dave has been serving as our Treasurer for over 27 years and has flawlessly maintained the fiscal order of our group, we all offer him our deepest gratitude for his long service. If you have any receipts or claims that have not yet been paid you have until the end of January 2004 to submit them to Dave Hirsch (see Contacts). Members dues are normally collected at the beginning of each year for the period Jan to Dec, however, the By-Laws provide for a grace period of up to but not to exceed three months. For this year only, we will be collecting the dues from February to December with no interruption in membership.

November 17, 2003: Sorry for the delay in updating the site, I've not had computer access for a while due to moving house.
